Kingsley Gate Partners hosted their first roundtable discussion over lunch at The Oberoi in Bengaluru on Tuesday, 17th April, as part of their Galaxy of Leaders conferences.

The panel discussion included chief executives, country heads and HR leaders from prominent companies across industries including financial services, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, technology and consumer goods and services. The theme of this year’s conference was “Have you hired a brilliant jerk?”

The session provided a unique lens on the topic, uncovering some of the best practices adopted by top companies as well as insights into the pragmatic methods adopted by industry veterans to overcome the challenges of hiring a ‘brilliant jerk’, a term popularized by Reed Hastings, way back in 2009.

Kshitij Jain, MD and CEO, Exide Life Insurance, remarked, “A good successful track record is imperative to consider when getting a candidate on board. However, a good track record is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for hiring a person.”

Furthermore, he also stated, “Senior level hiring when done under pressure is bound to compromise the quality of the hire and can adversely affect the organization.”

The challenges of hiring a brilliant jerk remain largely unaddressed and shrouded in challenges and complexity within organizations today.  Companies usually end up paying a much higher price in bringing certain brilliant employees on board, who are worth their weight in gold from a skills perspective, but sooner or later end up being terrible cultural misfits with an organization.

Narayan Thammaiah, Chief People Officer, Accel Partners opined that there are no ideal candidates out there. He stated that candidates should be required to come up with solutions to realistic problems during the interviews and case studies must be a pre-requisite for hiring processes. He also emphasised that it always makes sense to hire a candidate if he or she comes across as a problem solver, thinker and communicator.

A number of other suggestions were put forth on ways to avoid hiring a brilliant jerk and everyone in the room shared their stories of handling such folks which sparked a hearty discussion.

This was the first of the three roundtable discussions being held in 3 cities in India – Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi, by Kingsley Gate Partners.
